If you need more convincing, you have to know that around 53% of small businesses are already pouring their time and effort on social media activities. Since you need to keep up with the competition, you should definitely pay attention to these tips.

1.  Create a Facebook fan page   Facebook fan page

As of April 2012, it has amassed more than 900 million users worldwide, making it the biggest social networking site to date.

Take advantage of this fact by working on your Timeline. But before anything else, do not forget to check out the website’s guidelines on choosing a cover photo as well as its Pages Terms. This way, you can avoid breaching any regulation.

Once you have set up your page, you can begin posting niche-relevant images, videos, status updates with links, and milestones. As you are creating content, integrate keywords to increase the likely of ranking in search results.

2. Sign up on Twitter  twitter

As the second largest social site with around 500 million users as of April 2012, it is the perfect avenue for short sales pitches.

Once your profile page is up, you can start posting interesting tweets to keep your target users hooked on to your page. Of course, you have to keep it as short as 130 characters or less instead than the normal 140. By doing so, your followers can add their own insight whenever they retweet.

Finally, you have to write niche-relevant tweets because your messages will not count if these do not relate to your industry.

3.  Join LinkedIn LinkedIn

With approximately 161 million users as of February 2012 and geared towards professionals, this networking site is perfect for you as it is business-oriented.

If there is one key strategy for LinkedIn, it will be to take advantage of all its features to help you make the most of your page. Use LinkedIn Answers to post questions or DirectAds for your advertising messages.

Most importantly, “recommend” the services and merchandise of other entrepreneurs and write reviews for them, so they will do the same for you.

4.  Be on Google+  Google+

This social networking mammoth, which is already competing with the likes of Facebook and Twitter, has amassed more than 170 million users as of April this year despite the fact that it will still be celebrating its first-year anniversary on 28 June 2012.

It has plenty of wonderful features and functions, which are ideal for marketing your business. For example, the “Local” tab, which is an automatic upgrade from Google Places, helps you rank in location-based search results. On the other hand, “Hangouts” lets you broadcast your marketing videos, while “Circles” allows you to create specific user groups.

Of course, these are not all. Take time to familiarise each Google+ feature, so you can use everything to your advantage.

5.  Share on YouTube  You Tube

Categorised as both a search engine and a networking site, you can upload promotional videos here to publicise your company. This channel is a great tool for advertising purposes since you can reach out to a broad audience. What is more, you can lead the viewers to your social pages through it.

To make your videos rank in search results, you must not forget to create a script for the content. Additionally, incorporate captions and tags. Finally, come up with a fitting description and integrate keywords.

6.  Set up a blog   Blog

Accordingly, an estimated 68% of businesses are blogging, while around 23% of the companies included in the Fortune 500 have corporate blogs. So, aside from having your own website, you might want to focus on this strategy too.

By doing so, you can easily communicate sales messages to your customers. You can also disseminate relevant information without running out of words, in the case of posting status updates on your social pages.

Since most users (if not all) prefer fresh, unique, and informative insights, make it a point to write quality articles. Make sure that you integrate relevant keywords too, so your content will rank in SERPs.

 7.  Comment on other blog posts  Commenting

The blogosphere is all about fostering interaction among the bloggers and the readers as well as encouraging wide-scale sharing of information.

This strategy is a great addition to your marketing campaign since it allows you to get in touch with your target audience and other professionals. When you are able to build a strong relationship with them, you can gradually increase your business’ online visibility and, eventually, your sales.

8.  Join online forums

The purpose of this technique is to encourage multiple niche-based interactions. In a glance, the discussion boards are like FAQs pages with some people asking questions and the other participants giving answers.

The greatest benefit about taking part in forums is that you can determine which topics your customers are most interested in, what their opinions are, and what keeps them interested or turns them away. By figuring out these aspects, you will have an idea about keyword usage on your website and social pages.

9.  Start guest blogging   Guest Blogging

This strategy usually involves writing for bloggers, especially those who already have created a good name for themselves. If you are an established writer, some blog owners will invite you to come up with content for them. Alternatively, you can request to guest post.

Creating articles for other professionals is not different from writing for your website; you must focus on informative and interesting topics too. There is one thing you have to remember though; most bloggers do not allow self-promotion and backlinking on their sites. Then again, it still serves as a good way to increase your business’ exposure and credibility.

10.  Be a regular user  Friendly User

Simply put, you have to log in to your accounts at least five times a week to make sure that your followers or fans do not forget about you. Additionally, you must update your website and/or blog regularly.

Conclusion

There you have ten vital social media tips. With these effortless and less time-consuming techniques, you can achieve your marketing goals in no time. So, if you are not on the bandwagon yet, get on to it right away.
